Whatever the Weather

Whatever the Weather
8th & 9th June 2024

10am - 3pm

£160 (inc all materials and VAT)

Tutor - Janet Melrose

Picture
At the heart of Janet Melrose's practice is her interest in nature.  She is particularly interested in peoples' connection to a place, a landscape and to the life forms that coexist within that environment.

She has recently been developing a body of work about the processes of Rewilding, both as a natural occurrence and as deliberate human interference.

Found objects play an important part in her practice; wallpaper, discarded books, remains of a washing line, an upturned bath left to corrode, all help her to say something about our connection or disconnection to a particular place.

Artists have always been observing and saying something about themselves through the weather.

Storms in particular were and still are a popular motif.   JMW Turner lashed himself to a ships mast in order to experience and record a storm.  Joan Eardley asked her neighbours in the village of Catterline to let her know when a storm was on its way so that she could set up her large canvasses on the beach and paint the stormy sea.

Thankfully the weather can provide interest when the sunshines or the rain falls.

In this workshop we will explore ideas; soundscapes, mark making, materials which we can utilise to express, imagine and give new dimensions to our landscape work.
