Come and explore all the summer garden environment has to offer on this on-location course. Each week we will meet at a different and special garden in or around Edinburgh as we respond to each particular place through structured tasks, sketchbook work, and more personal responses in a variety of media. Alongside this we will be exploring the theme of the garden and be guided by artists who have been inspired by it.

Gardens powerfully inhabit our memory and emotions, our mind and our feelings. We think of them as sanctuaries, as places of reflection, restoration and rest. But they are both natural and unnatural places - places full of abundant plant life but also places where we try to bring an element of control, structure and order or composition, curation and beauty. Is it a coincidence that so many artists also like to garden? Both occupy spaces in which we create with colour, form, texture, composition, space, ideas. And in that sense all the elements that may make up a visual piece of work are here and ripe for the picking!
