Still Life Outside the Box

This course is designed to encourage students to think beyond the standard vase of flowers and get creative with what a still life painting can be and what it can mean.
Looking at the history of the Still Life genre as well as more unusual takes on the subject, students will look at how composition, subject matter and the use of metaphor can elevate simple depictions of objects to great works of art.
There will be an emphasis on developing ideas past the point of being ordinary to make memorable and meaningful paintings.
Starting with drawings in charcoal students will explore ideas for paintings which will be worked up into finished oil paintings.

Using the allotments of Cockenzie as our inspiration, this course will invite students to explore the shapes, colours and structures of the setting, to begin delving into a whole plethora of medium!
Looking at how to combine multi disciplinary media in order to create exciting surfaces to then develop into pieces that create an expression of the organic yet structured environment, this course is ideal for those who love to work in a materials led manner.
We will explore both traditional and non traditional mediums and processes, to arm you will a tool box of ideas and skills to move forward with, beyond the course.

The Studio in Colour

Using the diverse medium of soft pastel, this course will explore colour theory with a huge emphasis on atmosphere, space and feeling.
Each day the studio will be transformed by a different still life set up, exploring an aspect of colour. Expect an explosion of colour from still life to working with the figure!
Students will learn to understand colour temperature, harmony, light and palettes through a series of exciting projects across the four days.
Looking at Artists from Degas to Rousseau, this week is sure to set the senses alight!

The Sea, The Sea

The sea has been a draw for many Artists, Writers and Musicians since the beginning of time, and we are so lucky that our Paintbox Studio sits right on the coast.
From the power and energy of the waves, to the transient nature of the colour and light, this course will enable students to create large scale, free and expressive pieces on location at the sea's edge.
Working in both Acrylic and Oil Paint, students will begin by making quick responsive studies of the environment, in order to capture and essence of the place, before moving on to making a large scale painting on board over 2 days.

On the Edge of Abstraction

Using the landscape surrounding the studio, the course will explore how to move you work towards abstraction.
Starting by making drawings directly from observation, you will then be guided through a series of processes and ways of thinking to enable you to begin thinking and seeing in abstract way.
Inspired by the St Ives movement of painting, students will explore shape, space, colour and surface with a view to make a series of both small and large abstracted paintings.
