This course is designed to encourage students to think beyond the standard vase of flowers and get creative with what a still life painting can be and what it can mean.

Looking at the history of the Still Life  genre as well as more unusual takes on the subject,  students will look at how composition, subject matter and the use of metaphor can elevate simple depictions of objects to great works of art.

There will be an emphasis on developing ideas past the point of being ordinary to make memorable and meaningful paintings.

Starting with drawings in charcoal students will explore ideas for paintings which will  be worked up into finished oil paintings.

Cockenzie House & Gardens

Tutor- Jemma K Derbyshire

The sea has been a draw for many Artists, Writers and Musicians since the beginning of time, and we are so lucky that our Paintbox Studio sits right on the coast.

From the power and energy of the waves, to the transient nature of the colour and light, this course will enable students to create large scale, free and expressive pieces on location at the sea's edge.

Working in both Acrylic and Oil Paint, students will begin by making quick responsive studies of the environment, in order to capture and essence of the place, before moving on to making a large scale painting on board over 2 days.
