Wild Orchard: A Mosaic Habitat
The Clyde Valley is known as the ‘Fruit Basket of Scotland’ with a rare microclimate and orchard heritage reaching back over 900 years. Orchards are known for their mosaic habitats, rich in biodiversity.
To me, this is an endless source of subject matter. I am captivated by the shifts of colour in the sky and how it affects the contrast of fresh wildflowers against ageing trees.
My work begins with the experience. Early in Spring when the mornings open up, I’m drawn outside, mug of tea in hand, to soak up the light, inhale turquoise air, sink my feet into lime green moss and absorb this living palette.
I make observational sketches in pen, charcoal or ink and many studies capturing the movement and essence of my subject, then return to the studio to distil, reinterpret and reimagine.
For this body of work, I have used these studies to tear into collage and build up layers of thought, shape, mark and colour - the hinterland of my work. I have let the relationships of colour, tone and shape lead these paintings.
