Place, Colour, Memory
|
This course is about exploring the power of more personal colour to communicate ideas and feeling in our painting. Guided by the working processes of artists including Sargy Mann, Pierre Bonnard and Frank Auerbach we will be working within the creative colour space that opens up between drawing and painting.
Working out on location in the landscape we will first of all be gathering many research drawings of places and ‘moments’. We will be looking at things such as how to decide what information you need to record, developing your personal language of note-taking and mark-making in relation to painting and the use of memory as a key part of the creative process. We will then be looking at how we use these drawings in tandem with memory and imagination to create paintings with new subjective colour palettes - freeing ourselves in the process from the shackles of the original motif. Essential practical colour theory will be covered alongside looking at the more emotional and creative potential that colour can offer us. From hot, heightened and intense, to quiet and muted, or cool, calm and serene there will be the chance to break out and away towards a more personal and imaginative colour spectrum of possibilities! |
