Lorna Balmer
This body of work explores the ever-changing East Lothian coastline, the long stretches of sand on the Scottish Moray coast and the mountainous vistas and small villages of the beautiful Greek Island of Kefalonia: altogether culminating in a colourful fusion of personal landscapes.
My paintings are a variety of media including the use of acrylic paints, collage and the drawn mark. Working within the negative random shapes created when preparing heavily prepared and collaged surfaces on board and on card, the landscapes evolve when one area of the working piece is juxtaposed to another.
Attracted by the bright colours of the Mediterranean and the shifting colours of the sea, the shadows cast by emerging clouds and the hues created by landscape forms, influenced by landscape artists throughout the centuries, this body of work seeks to illustrate the strength, power and lure of the sea in all landscape forms.
