This work is inspired by views of the Borders countryside from and around my home, and by visits to St Abbs as we emerged from winter and lockdown. In both cases I’m interested in the balance and tension between the solid and unchanging - rocks, the shapes of the land - and the changeable and fleeting - the constant motion of water, the momentary flash of brilliance as sunlight touches a field.
I use a variety of media - paint, ink, wax, glazes - on heavily prepared paper to capture the richness of colours and variety of textures, contrasting areas of opacity with others that are smooth and translucent to create a varied and excitingly layered surface.
