Eleanor Cunningham
My work for Elements has been inspired by the coast in East Lothian where I live. The pieces are heavily influenced by textures in the landscape and these elements pieced together often resembles a patchwork of worn fabric. I've used mark making techniques and a range of collage papers to create an abstract representation of the coast and cliffs around Dunbar. The layers in the red cliffs and rocks leading into the sea are present in many of the works as well as the contrasting blue hues of the sea. The marks I've used often incorporate crossing lines which mimic the layers of rock but also seem to depict the warp and weft of fabric linking back to my studies in textiles. The slow build up and wiping away of layers creates a history to the work which mimics the natural passing of time, patterns and erosion in the landscape.
