The Contemporary Painting Course will take a fresh look at what is meant by 'contemporary painting' - from considering its placement in the Art World, to subject, style and content. Participants will not only learn how to develop their own painting language most suited to a contemporary audience, but will also consider the role of Social Media in order to share work to a larger audience and in order to engage with other Painters.
During the first term, participants will be set projects designed to help consider the basic building blocks of their own paintings, no matter what style or subject they work with. There will also be exploration of how to create particular effects and finishes, as well as how to effectively photograph work for wider distribution. As the course progresses, there will be greater emphasis on developing personal projects in order to create greater self awareness of the themes that are of most interest to the individual. The Course will culminate in students producing a full body of work that is distinctive in voice and style. Regular crits with the group throughout the year will be an important part of learning how to present your work and make the most of the feedback received. There will be lectures on painters who work in a variety of niches within the contemporary painting landscape; students will be asked to consider what part of that landscape holds the most interest for them and how they could start to engage with it. The course is aimed at those with prior painting experience, who would like to develop their work to the next level. |
