Never make another bland landscape painting! The Composed Landscape course will teach students the importance of strong composition and show that an imaginative and creative design can trump any amount of painting technique. Although painting techniques will be covered, this course will focus on learning to edit, simplify and arrange elements of a scene to create paintings that are memorable and have a lasting emotional impact on the viewer. Looking at landscape painters such as Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Ferdinand Hodler with a special focus on the philosophy and methods of Felix Vallotton, students will train to create order from chaos and build paintings with simple, powerful designs that are elevated from literal representations of nature. Using drawing, collage and painting in both acrylic and oil, this 10 week course will push students out of their comfort zones and challenge them to see the surrounding landscape with fresh eyes. Students can expect to finish the course with a small body of work that is bold with a distinctive edge.
