CALUM SMITH
I seek inspiration from wherever I see patterns of shapes within and around the objects I observe in the world. I draw them then work and re-work the image responding to it differently with every repetition. Relationships of colour, tone and mark become more important. Some earlier images stay in my memory and influence the resolution of the finished work.
What seems to be at the heart of my work is looking for the unrecognised in the observed world then using that as the starting point for finding a way to make a painting that I don’t recognise but which still has some formal cohesion.
