The hottest weekend of the year so far saw us at the stunning Over Kirkhope Farm in the beautiful Scottish Borders for our May Paintbox Luxury Art Retreat.
 The Friday starts off with a continental breakfast over looking the gorgeous Scottish Borders’ countryside then it was off to the studio. There was a lecture and slideshow about drawing and painting the landscape before the guests spent the rest of the morning outside drawing in the 25 degree heat! After a delightful lunch it was back to the studio for an afternoon of creating coloured sketches.
 On Friday evening Paintbox Luxury Art Retreats opened the cinema! We showed guests a film about David Hockney called “A Bigger Picture” a lovely way to wind down after a busy day in the studio. On Saturday, the day at the studio started with more painting outside, with the stunning weather it would be rude not to! However, after a huge thunder storm the guests moved back into the studio to work up finished paintings from the previous day and a final critique from tutor Jemma, ended their art workshop.
After another wonderful dinner produced by Lynsey guests had a relaxing evening socialising and relaxing in the welcoming lounge.
 Sunday morning saw one last breakfast before the guests had to head home. We loved our time providing our Luxury Art Retreat to some wonderful guests and the weather was an absolute bonus, we hope you enjoyed it as much as us and we can’t wait for the next one!

On a warm and dry day surrounded by luscious green fields filled with sheep and their lambs we find our base for today’s workshop, Marybank Hall in the Scottish Highlands. Today our workshop is Simply Still Lives based around the work and techniques of Euan Uglow. Lets find out a bit about Uglow-  Golden Rectangle Euan Uglow- 1932-200 Uglow was born in London and studied at both Camberwell School of Art and then the Slade, where he went on to teach for many years. Artist and Tutor William Coldstream was a very influential figure in his practice. His subject matter were namely the human form, and still life. He used meticulous measuring and mathematic techniques to construct his pieces, working in planes of subtle observed colour. Often he allowed some of his marks from measuring to show through in the final painting. This was a technique common with the Slade whose principles at the time were rooted in strong drawing skills. Many compositions based on the “Golden Rectangle” where by the ratio is 1:1.618 or the Greek Letter “phi”. This ratio exists throughout nature and is thought to be the most pleasing aesthetic arrangement.  The day starts with coffee and pastries and a slideshow about Uglow. Then on to tutor Jemma who does a small talk and demonstration about today’s techniques and what is hoped to be achieved. To the backdrop of calming classical music the students get started on their masterpieces the subject matter being small selections of fruit.
After an hour or so of painting we break for lunch, but first look at the paintings so far and assess where they need to be taken in the next part of the class.  A sumptuous lunch is served up by Lynsey of hearty BLTs, salad, crisps and delicious homemade lemon cupcakes. The students gather in the kitchen to devour their meals while discussing their morning painting.
 After the bellies are full the students are back at it. Jemma spends some one to one time with each student giving clear direction of how each student should look to finish their paintings.  Once the paintings are completed and everything is cleared away, all the masterpieces are hung up so Jemma and the students can discuss the paintings and the techniques that have been learned.
