A Matter of Choice - Observation and Selection
|
Letting go of careful and detailed drawing, can feel contrary to everything you are trying to do when working from direct observation. Yet that exactitude can both weigh a drawing down, and also be a barrier to interpretation, interesting mark making, and spontaneity. Accuracy of observation doesn't necessarily have to result in tight drawing and being selective is one of the most important elements in the creative process.
On the first day of this workshop students will make a series of energetic, gestural drawings of a still life studio set up, in charcoal, pencil, biro and ink. At the end of the first day one of the drawings will be chosen to provide the basis for a painted study in oils. The artists we will be looking at will be, among others, Piet Mondrian, Anne Gale, and Paul Cezanne. |
